Description
Alocasia baginda originates (likely*) from the state of Sarawak, a part of Malaysia on the island of Borneo, where it primarily grows in the shady undergrowth of rainforests, preferring limestone cliffs and slopes.
It is a compact species, with leaves only about 20 cm long that are strikingly hard and thick, reminiscent of succulent plant leaves. Overall, they grow to about 30 cm in height and width. There are several popular cultivars of A. baginda. 'Silver Dragon' has particularly beautiful silvery leaves with contrasting and sunken dark veins, which gives the leaf a spectacular 3D effect. Certainly one of the most beautiful Alocasia species and also very easy to care for.
*The actual origin of this species is unknown. It was only described as a distinct species in 2011, but was known as an ornamental plant long before that. However, no one currently knows where it actually comes from. Its morphologically most similar species, A. regina and A. reginula, come from limestone habitats in Sarawak. It is therefore likely that A. baginda also originates from this area, but it has not yet been found there. Future expeditions could provide clarity.
