Description
Alocasia cuprea originates from Borneo, more precisely from the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. It is relatively widespread and usually grows on slopes or near rivers and streams in the rainforest, on sandstone, limestone, and in ultramafic areas at an altitude of approximately 1000–1500 m.
Its striking, metallic leaves make it one of the most spectacular Alocasias.
The leaves of young plants are peltate, with partially to completely fused basal lobes, and both the underside and upper side have a reddish coloration. The upper side is metallic glossy pink with black veins, while the underside is uniformly red.
The leaves of mature plants grow up to 40x20 cm, are strongly ribbed and glossy, resembling coppery-grey breastplates. The reddish coloration is retained only on the underside.
'Red Secret' is merely an epithet for the species, not a specific cultivar that differs from the wild form. Differences in coloration in this species are more likely due to varying conditions and sizes.
