Description
Alocasia reginula is only known from cultivation. Botanists have not yet been able to find a naturally occurring species in the wild. Nevertheless, it is a distinct species and not a hybrid, as it exhibits few or no characteristics that might indicate a hybrid origin.
The origin of Alocasia reginula is unclear. Scott Hyndman, who named the variety, obtained material from the Harold L. Lyon Arboretum in Hawaii, which in turn supposedly came from a Japanese collector who had gathered the plant in Borneo. It likely originates from the Malaysian state of Sarawak and belongs to the Alocasia scabriuscula group. Like many other species in this group, it probably grows in nature on shady limestone slopes in dense undergrowth.
It is a small species with leaves only about 15 to 20 cm long, which are noticeably hard and thick, reminiscent of succulent leaves. Overall, they grow to about 20 to 30 cm tall and 30 cm wide. Several popular cultivars of A. reginula exist.
'Black Velvet' is not a variety in the true sense. Since all specimens of A. reginula likely originate from a single original plant, and this plant already bore the trade name 'Black Velvet', it is actually just the standard form of the plant, not a variety bred for specific characteristics.
