Description
Amorphophallus titanum , also known as the titan arum or titan arum, hardly needs an introduction. The flower of this gigantic arum lily is so impressive that whenever one opens in a public botanical garden, visitors flock there in droves to witness—and smell—the spectacle, which lasts only a single day.
Not only is the flower of this species gigantic (and even a record holder: largest unbranched inflorescence of all plants!), but the single leaf that the tuber produces and which looks like a small tree is also incredibly large, reaching up to 5 meters in height.
The tuber that produces these leaves and flowers can weigh over 100 kg. Under optimal conditions, it doubles or triples its weight each season. Once the tuber reaches a weight of approximately 20 kg, an inflorescence can form at the end of the dormant period (see Care). The inflorescence, typical of the Araceae family, emits a carrion-like odor for about 1-2 days, which in nature serves to attract and deceive pollinators.
This species is not easy to care for and naturally grows to a very large size. However, caring for it at home is certainly possible – based on my own experience of several years.
You will receive a strong young plant, approximately 20 to 40 cm tall, in a 9 cm square pot.
Please note: If you order this plant, please expect delivery only when the weather permits! Some of these plants no longer fit in our styrofoam boxes and are very sensitive to cold, therefore shipping will be delayed!
