Description
Anthurium peltigerum is one of the most unusual anthuriums. It originates from Ecuador. Along with Anthurium forgettii and Anthurium peltatum , it is the only one of over 1000 described anthurium species with peltate leaves, meaning the petiole is attached to the underside of the leaf blade, either centrally or (as in this case) offset upwards. " Peltigerum " means "bearing a shield," alluding to this unusual leaf shape.
In addition, the leaves of A. peltigerum are slightly cupped, a feature even more pronounced in young leaves, and have numerous prominent veins. The numerous basal veins and parallel tertiary veins give this species the appearance of a tortoise shell, and it is therefore sometimes referred to as the "turtle anthurium" (at least in English-speaking countries).
Young plants have light green leaves. In older, mature specimens, they become dark green and develop a velvety surface. Anthurium peltigerum grows large. The leaves can reach approximately 90 cm in length and 60 cm in width, on petioles up to 150 cm long.
In nature, Anthurium peltigerum usually grows epiphytically, at altitudes of approximately 400 to 2100 meters above sea level; it therefore prefers somewhat cooler temperatures.
You will receive a young plant in a 15cm orchid pot, approximately 30cm tall.
