Description
Anthurium regale originates from northern Peru. It grows along the river valley of the Rio Huallaga, which winds its way through the eastern slopes of the Andes. In the deep undergrowth of the premontane rainforest there, at altitudes of approximately 300 to 1000 meters above sea level , Anthurium regale is mostly found terrestrially (growing in the ground). This distinguishes it from most other cultivated and popular species, which are more likely to be epiphytic. It usually grows on steep slopes , often directly above streams and rivers.
Anthurium regale grows very large. The leaf stalks alone can reach 1.5 meters in length and bear leaves over 1 meter long and 50 centimeters wide. The leaves are typically heart-shaped for Anthuriums . On the upper surface, they are (when fully grown) velvety dark green with light veins that are clearly raised above the leaf surface. Fresh, young leaves are initially yellowish to orange, and only later light green.
The rhizome is compact, up to 5 cm thick, and grows upright. It regularly forms very thick, sturdy stilt roots that support it.
Anthurium regale only ever bears a few leaves at a time, even with good care and perfect conditions! More than three leaves simultaneously are rare in larger plants. Young plants often have a few more leaves, but mature specimens usually only have one to three.
