Description
Begonia bipinnatifida is a stem begonia that grows to about 40 to 60 cm tall without support, but considerably taller with support, reaching over 1.2 m. It is native to Papua (Indonesia) and grows in rocky areas of the central highlands. It belongs to the section Petermannia and was discovered in 1903 and scientifically described by botanist J.J. Smith in 1906.
The unusual leaves are bipinnate (bi-pinna). At first glance, they might not be recognized as begonias, but upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that they are indeed typical begonia leaves, only lacking the lamina (the leaf tissue) between the veins for the most part! The leaves grow to about 12 cm long and 8 cm wide.
B. bipinnatifida blooms with surprisingly large, pink flowers once it reaches a height of approximately 20cm.
In low light, the normally green upper surfaces of the leaves become significantly darker, almost black, creating a fantastic contrast with the always red undersides and stems.
It is one of the few begonias that has no problem being moistened several times a day in terrariums.
You will receive a plant approximately 10 to 15cm tall in a 7cm pot.
