Description
Begonia bowerae is also known as "eyelash begonia" because of the fine hairs on the leaf margin.
It originates from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, where it grows on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains at an altitude of 800 to 1300 meters above sea level. Within the genus Begonia , it belongs to the section Gireoudia . It grows with a creeping rhizome from which small leaves, up to about 8 cm long, emerge at short intervals. The rhizome of this species branches extensively, quickly forming a particularly dense carpet. It flowers with small, white blossoms that rise above the leaves.
The B. bowerae offered here belong to the nominate form ( B. bowerae var. bowerae ), which has a particularly beautiful, light green leaf without spots, surrounded by a continuous dark margin. This distinguishes the nominate form from the more commonly offered var. nigramarga .
