This begonia is a hybrid of Begonia darthvaderiana from Sarawak, Borneo, and an unknown second species from the section Petermannia , possibly Begonia atricha or Begonia malachosticta . Only described in 2014, Begonia darthvaderiana, with its unique appearance and striking name, attracted considerable attention and quickly became a "must-have" for begonia collectors. However, it soon became apparent that it is exceptionally difficult to cultivate, which is why its long-term care remained, and still remains, the domain of a few experts. Efforts were quickly made to make it more robust and thus more accessible to plant enthusiasts through hybridization and selection.
This begonia is the result of one of these selections. Unfortunately, we don't know its exact lineage and can therefore only speculate about what kind of hybrid it is. However, it is very similar in appearance to pure B. darthvaderiana , with a slightly wider light border around the dark, velvety leaves and a few randomly distributed green spots as the most noticeable difference. It is also sold as B. darthvaderiana 'Green Spots', which is misleading, as it is not the pure species.
It is significantly easier to care for and more robust than B. darthvaderiana . While this still doesn't make it suitable for indoor cultivation, it should also be kept in a terrarium. However, it doesn't require any special attention there, and anyone who has previously kept other Petermannia begonias in a terrarium should have no problems with it!
It blooms with surprisingly large, pink flowers.
