This begonia originates from northern South America, found in humid, shady spots in the mountain forests of Venezuela to Ecuador. It typically grows at altitudes above 1000 meters (up to 3000m!), thus in a rather cool climate with mild days and cold nights. However, in our experience, it also thrives in warmer conditions like a tropical terrarium and grows without problems. Individual findings in nature also exist in the tropical lowlands at altitudes of only 500 - 800m.
This species is widespread and several varieties exist (up to 9, depending on the author!). These differ mainly in the size of their leaves, the color of their flowers, and their natural distribution area. Some of these forms are also synonymized with the similar Begonia fuchsioides.
The 'Miniata' offered here is a particularly small-leaved form of Begonia foliosa with white flowers, especially suitable for terrariums. Its leaves only grow to 1 to 2 cm, and it grows rather flat or hanging, which makes it stand out best in a terrarium. Its small leaves and symmetrical branching make it look a bit like a fern.
Begonia foliosa can grow surprisingly large with enough time and good care. With age, it develops woody stems and can reach a height of 1 to 1.5 meters in nature or in a greenhouse. In a terrarium or as a houseplant, however, it remains significantly smaller and can be permanently maintained as a miniature plant through pruning.
It is conditionally suitable as a houseplant because it copes well with cool temperatures and rather low light. However, it requires consistently high humidity of 60% or more and must never dry out.
Within the begonias, it belongs to the section Lepsia.
You will receive a strong young plant in a 6 cm pot.
