This hybrid, produced by us, combines the best characteristics of its two spectacular parent species. It unites the unique blue sheen of Begonia kapuashuluensis (better known as Begonia sp. 'Temuyuk') with the beautiful leaf pattern of Begonia chlorosticta 'Dark Form' . The leaves are a very dark blue base color with a strong sheen (which was quite frustrating when photographing them!) and have light green spots. The deep blue base color is best seen in a dark environment and when the plant is illuminated from the front. New growth, as well as the undersides of the leaves and the stems, are dark red. We cannot yet say how large these hybrids will grow. Their final size will likely be about halfway between the up to 15 cm of B. kapuashuluensis and the up to 50 cm of B. chlorosticta . The size of the leaves should also be about halfway between those of the parent species.
So far, the hybrids are growing significantly more vigorously and easily than their parents, a clear case of so-called "hybrid vigor." Nevertheless, we would initially recommend them only for experienced begonia collectors and keep them in a terrarium.
