In northern Madagascar, Begonia lyallii can be found along streams and rivers at altitudes ranging from sea level to 1000 meters. It typically grows as a climbing plant on trees (epiphytic) or as a ground cover on damp rocks (lithophytic). Although its leaves are small and it grows slowly, it can eventually form remarkably large, dense carpets. When growing epiphytically, it does not climb trees to several meters in height, but remains close to the ground (where it is more humid) and forms a dense cushion.
The species is quite variable, and several differently appearing forms exist. The plants offered here belong to the form *masoalensis* , which is distinguished by its toothed leaves. This form is found only in a very limited area near the coast in Masoala National Park.
The national park protects the largest and one of the last remaining contiguous rainforests in Madagascar and is only accessible by a boat trip lasting several hours. There are no roads in or through the park. The park is also one of the wettest areas in Madagascar. During the rainy season, the park is therefore almost inaccessible. Even during the short dry season, it still receives a great deal of rain. These two factors certainly make Begonia lyallii f. masoalensis one of the rarest plants in our collection.
The delicate, light green leaves of Begonia lyallii f. masoalensis grow to about 6 cm in length and have a doubly toothed, red-edged margin. This is particularly beautiful on young leaves. This species also branches profusely and forms surprisingly hard, woody stems, which make older plants resemble bonsai.
The flowers are rather small, measuring 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter, and display a tasteful color gradient from pink inside to white outside.
Within the genus Begonia, it belongs to the section Nerviplacentaria .
