Begonia malachosticta originates from northeastern Borneo. It grows on limestone slopes in the Sandakan District of the Malaysian state of Sabah. Its leaves are pale to olive green on the upper surface and remarkably velvety, a quality difficult to capture in photographs. The striking pink spots are also velvety and slightly convex, making them particularly noticeable. The leaves grow to approximately 12–15 cm long and 8–10 cm wide. Also noteworthy is how thick and resilient the leaves become in larger specimens, almost succulent. Leaf stalks and stems are pale red. It grows surprisingly large! Mature specimens reach a height of 60–70 cm, and the stem becomes woody over time.
Young plants thrive in tropical terrariums, but larger plants tolerate drier conditions better than overly humid ones and are sensitive to overly wet substrate. However, they still require consistently high humidity, which is why we cannot recommend them as houseplants. Because of this difference between young plants and larger specimens, we have classified Begonia malachosticta as "advanced" in terms of care. In a terrarium or plant display case, it must be kept significantly drier than many other begonias from the same region, as it can otherwise very quickly develop fungal infections in its stems.
