This beautiful begonia from northwestern Borneo was described in 2017. It grows in the undergrowth of lowland mixed dipterocarp forests at elevations of approximately 100 to 400 meters above sea level on deeply shaded slopes. In nature, it appears to grow exclusively on these slopes. The few existing pictures and videos of this plant in its natural habitat show its stems growing outwards from the slopes. It emerges directly from the loamy, moist soil, which is almost or completely bare, without any significant leaf litter or detritus.
The stems grow to about 10 to 30 cm in length and are covered with dense, red hairs, giving them a felt-like appearance. The leaves are elliptical to obovate, approximately 9 to 15 cm long and 4 to 7 cm wide. On larger plants, they hang down. Each stem bears only a few leaves, about 3 to 8 at a time. The leaves, from which the species is named, are a deep malachite green to dark olive, with a strong sheen and a striking metallic indigo-blue hue. The leaves are bullate (bump-shaped), and the main veins are sunken between these bumps.
Begonia metallicolor has terminal inflorescences, meaning that after flowering, the stem cannot produce new leaves and eventually dies. However, new stems emerge from the base of the plant. Large, mature plants often have many stems simultaneously. The flowers are pink to whitish, but they also bear some of the red, appressed hairs that the stems also have.
It belongs to the Petermannia section.
