We created this begonia in 2021 by crossing Begonia pavonina 'Cyan' and Begonia U639 . From these seedlings, we selected the most beautiful and robust ones to grow to adulthood. After two years, only one plant, Begonia 'Nightfall', was selected from these. This is therefore a single cultivar (single clone). The gallery contains pictures of the mother plant and the young plants, both with and without flash.
It displays the best characteristics of both parent species. The leaves are velvety, very dark green in low light, and have a strong turquoise to light blue iridescence. They are somewhat larger and more pointed than those of Begonia pavonina 'Cyan', but not as long and pointed as those of Begonia U639. The petioles and undersides have a reddish tinge. Begonia 'Nightfall' grows faster and is significantly more robust than both parent species. Reaching a height of 30 to 35 cm, it also grows somewhat taller. It forms a dense bush.
Larger plants should be robust enough to be kept as houseplants, which isn't possible with the true Begonia pavonina (the 'Cyan' form). The small plants we're currently offering should initially be placed in a more sheltered location, such as a plant display case.
The flowers appear on approximately 30 cm long stalks and resemble those of B. pavonina . A striking feature is that the rear whorl of three petals displays a subtle pinkish hue, while the front whorl is white.
