This begonia originates from Khao Sok National Park and its surrounding area in southern Thailand. There, it grows directly from almost vertical limestone cliffs in shady, damp locations. Its thin, branching stems with their alternate leaves resemble fern fronds, which is how it got its name: " pteridiformis " means "fern-like." Begonia pteridiformis is an absolute miniature species. The stems reach a maximum length of about 20 cm, but it usually remains only half that size. The individual leaves are 4 to 5 cm long, narrow, and serrated at the edges. The entire plant is covered with tiny glandular hairs, which are only visible upon very close inspection. It looks its best when grown epiphytically or lithophytically in a terrarium, just as it grows in nature.
Begonia pteridiformis is a so-called tuberous begonia. It has an underground tuber (or, in this case, one embedded in a crevice of a slope) which allows it to survive the dry season. The green parts of the plant die back, and it enters a dormant phase lasting several weeks. This should be taken into account when caring for it. More information can be found in the "Care" tab.
Several differently colored forms of this plant exist. There are varieties with green, yellowish, and red leaves, and each of these variations comes in both spotted and unspotted versions. The 'Red/Pink' form has dark green, metallic-sheen leaves with deep red undersides and stems, as well as pink spots. It is also known as 'Pink Spot'. The flowers are also a more intense pink than those of the green form. However, the darker coloration only develops in larger plants and under relatively low light conditions.
It belongs to the Parvibegonia section.
