This begonia originates from near Salvador, in Bahia, Brazil. It grows in the hilly region at altitudes of approximately 300 to 800 meters above sea level in climatically favorable forests. This means somewhat cooler temperatures than in the hot lowlands and a less severe dry season than usual. It has kidney-shaped, downy leaves with a striking bluish-green color, which can even take on a violet hue in older plants, and light, yellowish-green veins. The hairs on the leaves (and all other parts of the plant) are red. The leaves are slightly thickened and have a velvety feel.
It grows as a creeping, flat rhizome. The leaves are also held flat against the ground (an adaptation to minimize evaporation during the dry season), and the entire plant, excluding the flower stalk, reaches only about 5 cm in height and approximately 30 cm in width. Its flower stalk grows to about 10 to 20 cm tall and bears white flowers with a slight pinkish tinge.
After an acclimatization period, it is also suitable as a houseplant, as it does not necessarily require high humidity. Anything above approximately 50% is sufficient.
It belongs to the Pritzelia section.
