Begonia thiemei originates from Mexico and Honduras and often grows there in very shady places in the undergrowth, mostly near small streams at altitudes of 100 to 900m above sea level.
Its very thick rhizome can grow upright, but usually remains flat on the ground and becomes woody over time. The leaves are palmate, with 7 to 10 leaflets. The individual leaflets have serrated edges and are dark green and highly glossy. Each leaflet can grow up to 25 cm long, and an entire leaf can then reach a diameter of over 50 cm. The undersides of the leaves are pale red. This, along with its size, distinguishes it from Begonia carolineifolia . The leaves are borne on very long petioles (up to 80 cm), and this begonia can grow to over 2.5 m tall. However, as a houseplant, it remains significantly smaller.
With its leaves, it resembles Begonia luxurians , but is dark green instead of light green and is also much easier to care for, making it very suitable as a houseplant for semi-shaded to shady spots.
The flowers are greenish-white and are borne on flower stalks up to 2m high.
It belongs to the Gireoudia section.
