Description
A handsome biophytum , slightly larger than B. sensitivum , with white flowers and a white marking at the base of the leaflets. This probably undescribed species originates from southern Peru , where it appears to be endemic. It most closely resembles the South American biophytum dendroides , but has different flowers and the striking white marking.
This is definitely NOT * Biophytum zenkeri* , although it is often sold under that name. *Biophytum zenkeri* looks completely different from this undescribed species. It grows in West Africa, is adapted to drought, compact, branched with thickened, woody stems, and has yellow flowers. So, in every aspect, it is completely different from the species sold here. How this undescribed species from South America came to be known as " *Biophytum zenkeri *" is a complete mystery to us.
Biophytum belong to the wood sorrel family (Oxalidaceae). Although they resemble mimosas and their leaflets can fold together, they are not closely related. With their mostly unbranched, upright stems and pinnate, circularly arranged leaves, they are reminiscent of small palms. Biophytum are usually self-fertile and even self-seed through bursting seed capsules once they reach flowering maturity after only a few months. This makes them interesting plants for cultivation in terrariums or (with limitations) as houseplants. With proper care, a small, self-sustaining population can soon be established.
Biophytum sp. Peru reaches a "crown" diameter of approximately 12 to 18 cm and a height of up to 30 cm, but usually remains smaller and only grows to about 15 to 20 cm tall.
You will receive a young plant approximately 5 to 10 cm tall in a 7 cm square pot.
