Ceiba pentandra (Kapok tree)

In nature, the kapok tree can grow into a true rainforest giant, reaching heights of over 50 meters and towering over most other trees in the rainforest. In cultivation, its growth is primarily dependent on its location and pot size. Its finger-like, lobed leaves are unmistakable, but the kapok tree is best known for its fruit. The seed hairs form a dense network of fibers, similar to cotton, which are white and silky soft. Unlike cotton, however, these fibers are very light and hydrophobic, meaning they repel water. They are a popular nesting material for birds and small mammals.
