Columnea x banksii 'Carnival'

Columnea are gesneriads from Central and South America, with epiphytic and mostly hanging growth and often very large, spectacular flowers.

Columnea x banksii is a hybrid of Columnea schiedeana and Columnea oerstediana . Normally, this hybrid has almost pure red flowers. However, the selected form 'Carnival' is distinguished by neon yellow flowers with a fine red edge. The flowers are approximately 5 cm in size.

The leaves of Columnea x banksii are also beautiful. They are about 2 to 3 cm long and, especially in low light, display an almost metallic olive green. In bright light, they become more of a light green.

Like most Columnea species, this one also prefers a trailing growth habit. The stems reach up to 1.5 meters in length and branch little, if at all. Instead, new stems usually only emerge from the base. It therefore looks best in a hanging basket.
