The button mangrove is one of the mangrove species that can be found somewhat further away from the coast and the flooded salt flats. Its branches lignify quickly, and its slow growth makes it easy to keep small. It is well-suited as a small mangrove for aquariums or as a bonsai.

This form, known as var. sericeus or fo. sericeus , has densely silvery-haired leaves and feels fuzzy. This is a protection against intense UV light and dehydration. It requires more light than the standard form to grow well.
