Description
This plant from New Zealand is an unusual member of the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The cultivar 'Red Star' displays brilliant red foliage under strong sunlight. The leaves grow up to 100 cm long and are only about 2 to 3 cm wide.
The red cordyline initially grows as a compact bush, but over time develops a woody trunk and eventually grows into a tree-like form. This is quite unusual, as members of the asparagus family belong to the monocotyledonous plants, which don't typically grow as true trees. Even palms, which also belong to the monocotyledons, aren't "true" trees because they don't exhibit secondary thickening. The cordyline, however, is a true tree, reaching up to 20 meters in height. It grows slowly, though, and takes several years before a trunk even appears.
The flowers are tiny, white, and appear in the hundreds on branched flower spikes. It blooms in early summer.
It is robust in our climate and can be cultivated in the garden, on the terrace or balcony almost all year round. However, it cannot tolerate frost.
You will receive a plant approximately 40 cm tall in a 14 cm round pot.
