Description
A very pretty mini orchid with quirky, square pseudobulbs and beautiful red/yellow flowers.
Dendrobium tetragonum originates from northern Australia, specifically New South Wales and northern Queensland. It grows epiphytically or lithophytically in damp ravines or gullies at elevations of 500 to 1200 meters, with initially upright, later drooping, conspicuously four-sided pseudobulbs.
The pseudobulbs grow to about 10 to 15 cm long and bear 2 to 3 oval or oblong, leathery, dark green leaves at their tips. Due to its trailing growth habit, it is best grown mounted on a support.
It blooms from autumn to spring with elongated, surprisingly large flowers with long, pointed petals. The flower stalk can rebloom over several flowering periods, so old flower stalks should not be removed! The nodes at the thickened points of the pseudobulbs can also produce flower stalks. It requires less water and fertilizer during the winter months.
You will receive a nearly flowering plant in a 6 cm orchid pot.
