Description
Dieffenbachia 'Crocodile' is a beautiful cultivar of Dieffenbachia seguine, which is widespread in Central and South America. In nature, D. seguine usually grows in shady spots in the undergrowth of rainforests, but it can also be found in clearings and often even at roadsides. It inhabits both moist and rather dry habitats. It is therefore very adaptable and copes well with many different conditions. This makes it a popular and easy houseplant.
Within its huge distribution area, it is very variable. There are forms with completely green leaves and others with patterns.
The 'Crocodile' cultivar is characterized by a strong green base color with very light green, almost yellowish spots and a dark green margin. It is somewhat reminiscent of 'Reflector', but is generally a little lighter. However, it has a similarly strong contrast. The most interesting feature of this cultivar, however, is its upright growth. Not yet recognizable in young plants, older plants become very narrowly upright with narrow, almost vertically held leaves. This is probably due to the mutation that causes two rows of protrusions to form on the underside of the leaves, which look like teeth. The name 'Crocodile' refers to this.
This cultivar has leaves up to 30 cm long and about 15 cm wide and, over time, forms an unbranched stem that can grow over 1 meter tall. New stems emerge from the base at a short distance from the main stem.
