Dioscorea sansibarensis

Dioscorea sansibarensis is a fast-growing vine from tropical Africa and Madagascar with exceptionally shaped leaves. They can reach up to 30 cm in width, making them surprisingly large! The leaves have a light green base color and a glossy sheen. They feature two "ears" that extend beyond the leaf stalk, as well as two "wings" and a long, pointed tip. They are somewhat reminiscent of Batman's favorite throwing weapon, the Batarangs. However, they are considerably less dangerous.

It grows very quickly, especially in warm temperatures and with sufficient fertilizer, and the vines can reach several meters in length! Unfortunately, the above-ground parts of the plant are only annuals and die after one season. Towards the end of the season, it forms bulbils along the vine, which detach when the vine dies and fall to the ground. After a short dormant period of 5 to 10 weeks, it then sprouts anew. In nature, this is how it survives the dry season.

You will receive a newly sprouting plant in an 11cm pot. This year's plants are not cuttings but are growing from tubers. They will grow much larger than shown in the product images!
