Diospyros nigra (synonym: D. digyna ) is a blackwood plant from the family Ebenaceae and is therefore related to plants such as persimmon and ebony.
What makes D. nigra so special are its fruits, which, due to their taste and color, have earned the name "chocolate pudding fruit." Resembling green persimmons in appearance, these fruits have dark brown to black flesh that also tastes like chocolate. It is sweet, soft, and can be eaten raw.
This evergreen, tropical tree grows very slowly, but in nature can reach heights of over 20 meters. It has large, thick leaves with smooth edges and abundant branching, forming a dense crown.
