Description
Dossinia marmorata is a larger jewel orchid found only in Borneo. It grows in very shady places, mostly directly on moist rocks (lithophytic). It grows to about 8 to 12 cm high (excluding the flower stalk), with leaves 7 to 12 cm in size. It becomes somewhat larger than most other jewel orchids and also larger than the very similar-looking Macodes sanderiana. The leaves have a brown, sometimes almost black, base color and fine, strikingly orange to red glittering leaf veins, which makes it very well camouflaged on the forest floor.
The leaves are arranged spirally on the individual shoots, and when they reach a certain size, an inflorescence emerges from their center, which can reach up to 25 cm in height. The flowers are small, brownish-red or white, and rather inconspicuous. After flowering, the shoot from which the inflorescence grew slowly dies back, but produces numerous runners that in turn grow to flowering size. Through this cycle, a single plant eventually forms dense mats, which looks absolutely stunning in a terrarium.
We are not entirely sure about the identity of this plant. It could also be a hybrid with Dossinia marmorata, e.g., D. marmorata x M. sanderiana 'Charlot Teng'. However, this can only be determined once the plants bloom, which has not yet happened with us.
You will receive a vigorous young plant in a 5cm round pot.
