Description
This sundew originates from a very small distribution area in South Africa. It grows in loosely scattered populations only in a single valley in the Western Cape province near the city of Wellington. The species is critically endangered in the wild.
Drosera regia is one of the largest sundews. It grows upright, with a short, woody (!) rhizome and leaves up to 40 cm long (in rare cases up to 70 cm) but only 2 cm wide. This species is known for catching even larger prey such as beetles and butterflies.
Together with the closely related but much smaller species Drosera arcturi from Tasmania, Drosera regia is considered the most basal representative of the sundew family.
Drosera regia enter a dormant phase during the colder months and form a winter bud consisting of a dense cluster of short, stiff leaves without sticky droplets. The plants begin this dormancy period in mid-July. The typical growing season lasts from October to April, but this can vary, and the plants can also grow year-round without a dormant period.
You will receive a young plant, approximately 20cm in diameter, in a 9cm pot.
