Description
Green or true cardamom ( Elettaria cardamomum ) belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) and originally comes from South India, Sri Lanka and Thailand, but is now cultivated in all tropical regions of the world and has also become naturalized in some areas.
Typical of ginger family plants, cardamom has an underground rhizome from which stems, up to 2 meters tall, grow, bearing leaves arranged in two rows and approximately 40 to 60 cm long. The entire plant has a pleasantly aromatic scent. The flowers appear near the ground and are white with purple or red stripes on the lip.
Cardamom spice is made from the seeds, which contain an essential oil that gives them their characteristic spicy, sweet-and-spicy aroma. The leaves can also be used, for example, to make tea. Ground cardamom seeds are very popular in Arabic and Asian cuisine and are, for example, a key ingredient in Indian masalas.
Cardamom is undemanding as a houseplant and can also be placed outdoors in a sheltered, semi-shaded location during the summer.
You will receive a strong plant in a 13cm pot, approximately 35 to 50cm tall.
