Episcia cupreata 'Malayan Gem'

Episcia cupreata is a small member of the Gesneriaceae family, native to southern Mexico and Brazil. It grows as a ground cover but can also climb on moist surfaces. Without support, it remains very low-lying, only about 10 cm tall. It has round, downy leaves that are about 8 cm long and 4 cm wide. The species is highly variable in nature and usually has mostly dark leaves with metallic silver or pink veins. Many cultivars exist in which these colors are particularly pronounced. In 'Malayan Gem', the leaves are almost entirely a metallic, glossy pink! The bright red flowers are about 4 to 5 cm long and have five petals fused at the base to form a tube.

It is extremely easy to care for in a terrarium and quickly forms a dense carpet. It is also well-suited as a houseplant for a shadier location.
