Description
The Spitting Palm is a very decorative euphorbia from Madagascar; it is not a true palm (Arecaceae).
It gets its nickname "spitting" from the way it disperses its seeds. When ripe, the seeds are catapulted several meters away by a throwing mechanism (called ballochory) and can then suddenly germinate in other pots in the home. This is possible even with just one plant, as they self-pollinate. However, unwanted seedlings don't become a nuisance, as they don't root deeply and are easy to remove.
Like all members of the spurge family, it contains a milky sap in all parts of the plant.
