Description
This small, climbing or ground-covering ficus likely originates from Southeast Asia and is ideally suited for terrariums. The leaves are slightly bladder-shaped ("bullate") and light green when young, later becoming dark green. They have a lobed shape reminiscent of oak leaves, which is why it is also known as the "oak-leaf ficus." It grows relatively slowly and is considered delicate. However, in our experience, it is actually quite robust if left undisturbed as much as possible (be careful when repotting and prune sparingly/not at all).
There is some confusion surrounding the scientific name of this species or form. We also cannot say for certain which species it belongs to. What is certain is that " Ficus quercifolia " is not an accepted scientific name. It is listed as a synonym for Ficus montana and Ficus sinuata . It is definitely not Ficus montana , as this species only develops oak-like leaves when very large and mature, not as a young plant.
The plant sold as " Ficus quercifolia " could actually be a young Ficus sinuata . Many ficus plants look completely different as young plants than as mature specimens. However, they never reach this mature form in our terrariums.
The name " Ficus scandens " or variations thereof, e.g., " Ficus scandens var. quercifolia ", is definitely incorrect. Ficus scandens is not an accepted species. However, we list the name here because it has become commonly used for this plant.
You will receive a well-rooted plant with several shoots in a 7cm pot.
