Fittonia albivenis (Nerve Plant) - various colours

Fittonia albivenis originates from South America and is deservedly one of the most popular small houseplants and terrarium plants. It grows in the undergrowth of tropical rainforests in often very dark, humid conditions, but nevertheless copes well with typical apartment conditions and thrives even in rather dark corners. It grows as a small ground cover, forming dense carpets. It reaches a height of approximately 10 cm. It can also be grown as a hanging plant in a hanging pot.

Its leaves, which are approximately 3 to 6 cm in size, have very contrasting veins. There are many different varieties in a range of colors. Despite this diversity, all these forms belong to the same species, Fittonia albivenis . The commonly used name Fittonia verschaffeltii is a synonym for F. albivenis .

In the genus Fittonia, there is only one other species besides this one, the much larger and very rarely offered Fittonia gigantea .
