Geogenanthus ciliatus belongs to the Commelinaceae family. It grows on the rainforest floor, often in the deep shade of ancient trees, with a creeping, fleshy rhizome from which the leaves and flowers emerge at regular intervals. The leaves grow to about 20 cm, and in exceptional cases up to 30 cm. Fresh leaves appear rolled up and green, unfurling over several days to develop their characteristic color and wavy shape. The leaves are strikingly thick and fleshy. Their deep purple to blue color, combined with their intense sheen, makes them very difficult to photograph. To me, the leaves resemble an oil slick...
You can only truly "experience" this plant in real life!
The undersides of the leaves are deep purple and covered in yellowish hairs. The flowers are violet and inconspicuous, lasting only a few days.
The thick, vibrant orange roots are particularly noticeable when repotting. Together with the rhizome, they serve as storage organs for nutrients and water for the short dry season in the plant's habitat.
