Description
Goodyera schlechtendaliana is a small jewel orchid with a very wide distribution range from Tibet to Sumatra to Japan. It grows in very shady places, mostly directly on moist rocks (lithophytic). It grows to only about 5 to 10 cm high (without flower stalk), with leaves 3 to 5 cm in size. The species is very variable in its leaf coloration and can be completely green, green with white veins, or almost white with only small green spots. In Japan, it is known as "Miyamauzura" (深山鶉 or ミヤマウズラ) and various cultivated forms exist. These cultivars are known under the collective term 'Nikishiran (錦蘭). So the name actually refers to many different forms. In Europe, only a single form of it is common and is regularly offered, including by us. This form has then become known here as "Nishikiran Japan," although that is not its actual name. Sometimes it is also offered as "var." Nishikiran, but botanically this makes no sense.
The leaves are spirally arranged on the individual shoots, and when they reach a certain size, an inflorescence emerges from their center that can reach up to 25 cm in height. The flowers are small, brownish-red or white, and rather inconspicuous. After flowering, the shoot from which the inflorescence grew slowly dies back, but forms numerous runners that in turn grow to flowering size. Through this cycle, dense mats form from a single plant over time, which looks absolutely stunning in a terrarium.
You will receive a young plant in a 5cm round pot or 7cm square pot.
