Description
This tropical clubmoss originates from the tropical islands of Southeast Asia and is known by several names. The accepted name (according to PPG 1) is Phlegmariurus nummulariifolius , but the older name, Huperzia nummulariifolia , is found in most sources.
Whatever its true name, this beautiful spore-bearing plant is a real eye-catcher in any tropical terrarium. In nature, it grows epiphytically on larger trees, hanging from them. It can reach impressive lengths of about 2 meters. However, since it grows rather slowly and can be easily pruned, its size doesn't pose a problem in a terrarium.
"Nummulus" is Latin and means "little coin" or "coin." This refers to the tiny, round leaves that lie tightly across the stems on both sides, resembling sequins or small coins. Their appearance is unique, even among the often very peculiarly shaped clubmosses. The individual stems always branch dichotomously (in two parts) and equally, resulting in a highly symmetrical appearance. After three or four branchings (i.e., when they have eight or sixteen ends), the so-called strobili ("cones") grow at the tips, in which the spores are formed. Once the strobili have formed and spores have been distributed, the branch stops growing and dies from the base. New stems develop from the base and repeat this process. Over time, the entire plant is completely renewed in this way.
You will receive a strong plant with several stems approximately 20 to 30 cm long in a 10 cm hanging pot.
