Mediocalcar decoratum

A very small, creeping, mat-forming orchid from New Guinea. It grows as a dense, richly branched mat, epiphytically in moist and shady locations, at altitudes of 900 to 2500 meters.

The stems, thickened into pseudobulbs, are a striking feature. They are cylindrical to almost club-shaped. The 3 to 4 leaves per bulb are fleshy, only about 5 to 8 mm long and 2 to 3 mm wide, and are all arranged in one plane at the end of each pseudobulb, resembling small propellers. It flowers on an apical inflorescence with a single, bell-shaped, long-lasting, candy-like flower that looks almost exactly like a candy corn.

One of the best and most beautiful miniature orchids for humid, not too warm terrariums.
