This is a hybrid of two Microsorum species from Thailand, known as the "oil fern" because of its blue-metallic color. It is sometimes (incorrectly) sold under the name Microsorum thailandicum "Giant" or "Giant Form".

It inherits the broader fronds and water glands (hydathodes) of Microsorum siamense and the longer leaves of Microsorum thailandicum . Overall, however, the entire plant is larger than both parent species and can develop fronds up to 50 cm long! The leaf coloration also falls precisely between its two parents: not quite as deep blue as M. thailandicum , but also not quite as turquoise as M. siamense .

It is generally larger and more vigorous than its parents (so-called "hybrid vigor") and, with some care, can be acclimatized to life as a houseplant. However, we recommend keeping young plants in a plant display case or terrarium.
