Description
Mitragyna speciosa , the kratom tree, originates from Thailand and the northern Malay Peninsula. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family and, like many other members of this family, is used for its constituents.
The kratom tree grows up to 20 meters tall, but like almost any tree, it can be kept smaller by pruning. The large leaves feel like parchment and have (in bright light) striking red veins. These leaves are the part of the plant that is used. They contain the alkaloid mitragynine. Low doses have a stimulating and energizing effect, while high doses are said to have a more sedative effect. A special characteristic of mitragynine is that it apparently does not interfere with the reward system of the central nervous system, and therefore no addiction develops. Nevertheless, caution should be exercised when consuming it, as higher doses and long-term use can still lead to side effects such as loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.
The leaves are processed in various ways, and depending on the harvest time and processing method, the resulting powder is called white, green, or red kratom. The active ingredient content of kratom leaves depends on the growing conditions and the season, not on the "variety" of the tree. Traditionally, and still today in the native countries of the kratom tree, the fresh leaves are simply chewed raw, sometimes prepared as an infusion, and not ground into powder.
The inflorescences are spherical and bear 30-80 small, yellow individual flowers.
You will receive a young plant approximately 10 to 15 cm tall in a 9cm pot.
