Description
Myrtillocactus geometrizans originates from northern to central Mexico and is widespread and common. It has a bluish waxy coating on its stems. In German, it is called "Heidelbeerkaktus" (blueberry cactus).
This cactus grows large, reaching about 4-5 meters in height, and mature plants branch profusely, resembling a chandelier. The individual stems are 6-10 cm in diameter, with five or occasionally six ribs. The flowers are rather small, creamy white, and about 2.5 cm in diameter. The fruits are edible and resemble blueberries ( Vaccinium myrtillus ). Both the scientific and common names derive from this resemblance.
The Japanese cultivar 'Fukurokuryuzinboku' (Japanese kanji:福禄竜神木) is an unusual form of this otherwise common cactus. Its colloquial names, "Boobie cactus" or "Titty cactus," derive from the distinctive shape of its bulbous ribs, which resemble breasts. This cultivar has 5-8 (instead of 5-6) strange, keel-shaped ribs, resembling a woman's breast, with a depth of about 2.5 cm and areoles spaced approximately 3-5 cm apart. Each rib is bordered by irregularly folded longitudinal grooves. Spines appear irregularly and are often absent.
The name 'Fukurokuryuzinboku' refers to the two gods Fukurokuju, one of seven lucky gods, and Ryūjin, the "god of dragons".
You will receive a strong plant approximately 7-8 cm tall in a 6.5 cm pot.
