Nautilocalyx lynchii is a member of the Gesneriaceae family from Ecuador, Colombia, and northwestern Brazil (Acre). This species, rather rare in the wild, can be found in many botanical gardens, but is still almost unknown in private cultivation. In its natural habitat, it grows in the floodplains of the numerous rivers and streams of the western Amazon rainforest. Its leaves are dark green to black and highly glossy on the upper surface, and deep red on the underside. The largest Nautilocalyx we offer grows to over 120 cm tall, with leaves approximately 20 to 25 cm long. The creamy-white flowers with their attractive purple markings provide a striking contrast to the black leaves and red stems.

Of all the Nautilocalyx in our collection, this one is the most vigorous and also (given sufficient moisture) very robust. We can't say for sure, but we suspect this species would also thrive as a houseplant in a partially shaded location. It should never be allowed to dry out completely!
