Nautilocalyx picturatus is a member of the Gesneriaceae family from Peru. It grows at altitudes of 300–400 meters above sea level on the rainforest floor, often also on decaying tree trunks. The leaves reach approximately 20 cm in length and 5–7 cm in width. They are arranged in a rosette on a short stem, about 10–20 cm tall. They are dark brown to black with deeply sunken, light green veins. The entire leaf is very textured and hairy. On the underside, the leaves are patterned red and green. Overall, it is somewhat reminiscent of a palm tree.
It blooms regularly and profusely with white flowers typical of Gesnerias, which are about 3 to 5 cm long and only last a few days.
