Description
Nepenthes × Briggsiana is a primary hybrid of two spectacular parent species, Nepenthes lowii and Nepenthes ventricosa .
Nepenthes lowii is a pitcher plant from the highlands of Borneo and produces large, toilet-shaped pitchers . Nepenthes ventricosa originates from the Philippine island of Luzon and grows there in both the highlands and lowlands. It produces pitchers that are constricted in the middle.
Nepenthes × Briggsiana combines the characteristics of its two parent species, but grows significantly faster and is also much easier to care for, making it very well suited as a houseplant. It's considerably cooler than the "usual suspects" Nepenthes hybrids often offered in garden centers and hardware stores.
It reaches a diameter of about 50 cm and a length of several meters if the tendril is not pruned. The pitchers grow to about 20 to 25 cm in diameter, and in larger specimens, they exhibit even more pronounced characteristics of the parent species, such as the bristles on the underside of the lid, which it inherited from N. lowii . The persitome (rim of the pitcher opening) is strikingly striped red and green in fresh pitchers and darkens to a deep red over time.
