Description
Nepenthes macrophylla is one of the largest and most spectacular members of the genus and one of the most impressive carnivorous plants of all.
It is only found on the slopes of Gunung Trusmadi and some surrounding peaks at altitudes of 2000 to 2642 meters, and is therefore considered a highland species.
As the name suggests, it grows very large. The leaves can easily reach 60 cm in length, sometimes even more. It reaches a diameter of approximately 120 cm and a length of several meters. It grows slowly, typical of highland Nepenthes . The barrel-shaped to elongated pitchers grow to about 35 cm high and 15 cm wide. They have a strongly pronounced, ribbed peristome with inward-pointing "teeth," for which the species is known. The color of the pitchers and peristome varies considerably, from green through yellow and orange to red.
Nepenthes macrophylla is one of several coprophagous Nepenthes species. Glands beneath the pitcher lid secrete a sugary nectar that is consumed by mountain tree shrews ( Tupaia montana ). The pitchers are shaped in such a way that the shrews are forced to sit on them in such a way that their excrement falls into the pitcher. N. macrophylla lives off these nutrients.
Due to the required significant nighttime temperature drop and the sensitivity of this species, it should be reserved for experienced Nepenthes keepers.
You will receive a well-hardened young plant, approximately 3 to 5cm in diameter in a 5.5cm pot (see picture 2 & 3 in the gallery).
