Description
Nepenthes × Gaya is a hybrid of N. khasiana × ( ventricosa × maxima ). It was bred and selected in 2004 by Leilani Nepenthes (Colorado Springs, USA) and has since proven to be one of the most robust and beautiful Nepenthes that can be kept as a houseplant.
Under good conditions, its pitchers only reach about 15 cm in diameter and are bright red with yellow speckles. The vibrant red peristome and the light interior of the pitcher create a striking contrast. The lid of the pitcher is particularly beautifully marbled. The pitchers are rounded and somewhat squat, with a prominent "hip" and a rounded base. A particularly striking feature of this hybrid is the sheer number of pitchers it produces simultaneously. It is not uncommon to see more than 10 active on a single plant at the same time!
The ratio of pitcher size to leaf size is also fantastic. In this hybrid (given sufficient light), the pitchers are almost exactly the same size as the leaves. Overall, it remains rather compact with a diameter of approximately 30 cm.
Fresh leaves are orange to reddish.
