Description
Orthophytum gurkenii is certainly one of the most spectacular of all bromeliads ( Bromeliaceae ). This species originally comes from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, where it grows in the relatively dry hills. The leaves are strikingly patterned with white, wavy stripes, which turn almost black in sufficient light, creating a unique zebra-like effect.
This species is extremely rare and relatively difficult to grow from seed. Fortunately, it is easy to care for once it has survived the critical early stages. After that, it is simple to maintain and well-suited to a sunny spot near a south- or west-facing window.
