Description
Pellionia repens , also known as Procris repens (both names are used), originates from Southeast Asia and belongs to the nettle family (Urticaceae). However, it does not have stinging hairs and is not poisonous.
It grows as ground cover in shady areas of the rainforest undergrowth and can develop very different leaf colors and shapes depending on the amount of light it receives. In low light, the leaves become small, rounded, and almost completely black. In bright light, the leaves become elongated (up to about 10 cm long), with only the edges dark, while the center becomes silvery and light green. Both leaf shapes can occur on the same plant, depending on the amount of light reaching each part! We have both leaf shapes in the gallery, and the pictures are of the same plant!
In a terrarium, it can be grown as ground cover or as a hanging plant (e.g., on the back wall). As a houseplant, it looks best in a hanging pot. The shoots grow to approximately 1 meter in length.
The flowers are inconspicuous yellowish and are borne on long, upright flower stalks.
Depending on availability, you will receive either a strong young plant with two shoots in a 5.5 cm pot or two strong, fresh cuttings without roots.
