Description
A very pretty natural form with patterned leaves and a pendulous growth habit. It probably originates from the Philippine island of Luzon.
Phalaenopsis schilleriana differs significantly from the "typical" hybrid orchids known from conventional plant nurseries. It has patterned leaves with silver-green spots or areas, often arranged in bands. The undersides of the leaves are dark, reddish to violet. The leaves grow up to 20 cm long and are limp and pendulous, not stiff. In nature, the plant hangs down from the branches of larger trees and does not grow upright. It usually bears only 2 to 4 leaves at a time. The roots are not round and white, but flat and silvery with reddish tips. The flower spikes are thin and grow strictly pendulously (if allowed). The flowers themselves are delicate pink to pink, with some yellow on the labellum. They are smaller than "typical" Phalaenopsis and do not last as long, only about 4 to 6 weeks. They emit a very light, sweet scent. Phalaenopsis schilleriana blooms in winter to spring and does not require any particularly different care for this. Due to its pendulous growth and origin from quite humid rainforests, it is also well suited for cultivation in a terrarium.
You will receive a young plant in a 6 cm orchid pot. Will be ready to flower in approx. 12 to 24 months.
