Phalaenopsis 'SOGO Vivien F858' Peloric + Variegata

A very pretty mini-Phalaenopsis with variegated leaves and peloric flowers.

The somewhat long and complicated name might require some explanation: This Phalaenopsis was bred by SOGO Orchids CO., Ltd., a globally leading nursery specializing in Phalaenopsis breeding, based in Taiwan. SOGO's ' Vivien ' series has been around since 1999. It is a complex hybrid, distinguished primarily by its small size and densely packed, pink flowers. A true mini-Phalaenopsis, reaching a leaf span of only about 15 to 20 cm! The flowers are also only about 4 cm across. Selection F858 from this 'Vivien' is further distinguished by stable variegation of the leaves. The leaf margins are always creamy white. In bright light, additional white stripes may appear! Furthermore, this selection is also characterized by so-called peloric flowers. This is a mutation in which the otherwise zygomorphic flower becomes radially symmetrical. In orchids, this means that instead of one lip, three lips develop. However, the two petals with the mutated lips are not fully formed, but only roughly resemble the original shape. A small lip primordium can still be seen!
